National Governor's Association 2018 partnership

9 February 2018

Founded in 1908, the National Governors Association (NGA) is the collective, bipartisan voice of the nation’s governors and one of Washington, D.C.’s most respected public policy organizations. Its members are the governors of the 55 states, territories and commonwealths. NGA provides governors and their senior staff members with services that range from representing states on Capitol Hill and before the Administration on key federal issues to developing and implementing innovative solutions to public policy challenges through the NGA Center for Best Practices.

The NGA organizes meetings of Governors twice annually, in the summer, rotated through the US states, and a winter session, traditionally held in Washington DC. Almost all State Governors attend the meetings.

The NGA Chairman, Governor Sandoval of Nevada, invited Australia to be an international partner to the NGA for the 2018 Winter meeting and for Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, Prime Minister of Australia, and all Australian Premiers and Chief Ministers to attend the Winter session in recognition that the year marks 100 years of Mateship – the centenary of Australia’s military partnership with the United States.  Prime Minister Turnbull will address the opening plenary of the session.

A group of CEOs from major Australian companies will also accompany the delegation to engage in high level business discussions with a group of CEOs from major United States companies with interests in Australia.  The meeting will provide Australian government and business leaders an opportunity to foster new partnerships and discuss strengthening bilateral ties between with the United States at the state and business level.

This session this year will gather in the nation’s capital to discuss critical topics such as the future of food and agriculture, strategies to address the opioid crisis in the United States, innovation in higher education and international partnerships, transitional assistance to veterans, emerging technology in the energy and transportation sectors, and state economies and the future of work and skills.

The Embassy of Australia is a partner with NGA with the event.  The Australian embassy in Washington DC will host the NGA opening reception, showcasing the best of Australian food, wine and culture.
