Ambassador Hockey welcomes Prime Minister Turnbull

17 February 2018

Ambassador Hockey Welcomes Prime Minister Turnbull To The United States

The Ambassador of Australia to the United States, His Excellency the Hon Joe Hockey, is delighted to welcome the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, to the United States from 21-24 February as part of the largest and most significant delegation of Australian government leaders and business leaders ever to visit the United States.

“Prime Minister Turnbull’s visit will reinforce our two countries’ century-long mateship and shared values,” Ambassador Hockey said. “We look forward to finding new ways to expand and strengthen our cultural, security and economic ties at every level.”

The Prime Minister will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss an Australia-United States partnership for the 21st Century, including how we can strengthen our economic links to create more jobs, and expand our national security cooperation.

The Prime Minister will also address the Winter Meeting of the National Governors Association, and the Embassy of Australia in Washington will host a reception honouring the US Governors.

The visit will commemorate the first 100 years of mateship between Australia and the United States and further enhance our relationship as we look towards another century of partnership. The quintessentially Australian term “mateship” exemplifies the special bond our nations have shared — both in times of conflict and times of peace — since our troops first fought side by side at the Battle of Hamel in 1918 under the command of Australian General Sir John Monash. It embodies friendship, loyalty, solidarity, equality and trust.

The United States is Australia’s most important ally and our largest economic partner. Our nations share a commitment to the same values – of freedom, democracy and the rule of law.
