The 2nd Annual Mateship Charity Golf Tournament

On Monday September 10, The Embassy of Australia in partnership with the American Australian Association (AAA) hosted the 2nd Annual Mateship Charity Golf Tournament. Held at the prestigious Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey, the tournament provided an opportunity to honour and remember our military heroes and celebrate the mateship between our two countries, while raising more than $200,000 for the AAA’s Veterans’ Scholarship Fund (VSF).

We were joined by Australian sporting legends – proud golf champion and US resident Greg Norman AO, Olympian and NBA superstar Matthew Dellavedova and LPGA pro golfer and philanthropist Jan Stephenson OAM. We were also honoured to host veterans from many theatres of war, a number of whom were well into their 90’s, having served our nations with distinction and valour.

The VSF was launched in recognition of the depth and strength of our 100 years of Mateship with the United States and aims to further develop and cement the close and cooperative relationship that exists between our troops and military organisations. Each hole on the course was designed to educate and inspire attendees by highlighting this 100 year military alliance.

The VSF provides invaluable opportunities for honourably discharged Australian and American veterans preparing to enter the next phase of their careers, allowing them to study abroad and experience firsthand the culture and society of the others’ country. The experience of living and studying in each other’s countries builds on the knowledge and understanding of the bilateral relationship that our veterans’ have acquired during their service.

The Embassy and AAA would like to thank the many sponsors and participants for their generosity in making the day such a huge success, in support of such a worthy cause. We’d also like to thank award winning Australian Chef Adam Stratton of Sydney’s Tender Gourmet Butchery for serving up his ‘world’s best sausages’ to our participants and the Greatest Generations Foundation, who are dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of veterans to ensure their legacies are recorded and retold to future generations.
