About the Department

The Department of Home Affairs is a central policy agency, providing coordinated strategy and policy leadership for Australia's national and transport security, federal law enforcement, criminal justice, cyber security, border, immigration, multicultural affairs, emergency management and trade related functions.

Overview of the section:

The position is part of the Visa and Citizenship section in Washington. This section is responsible for all visa and citizenship operations for applicants residing in the United States, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands, including third country nationals. The office supports the delivery of a range of Australian visa and citizenship programmes, which may include visitor, short stay business, transit, partner, child and citizenship by decent applications.

About the Position

Located in the Visa and Citizenship section of the Embassy, Visa Processing Officers are responsible for assessing and deciding temporary and permanent visa applications and Australian citizenship by descent applications. The successful candidate will have the ability to interpret and apply legislation and policy, prepare correspondence and communicate with clients from diverse backgrounds, their families and advisors. Visa Processing Officers work in a co-operative team environment while taking responsibility for managing their own workload. Initiative and flexibility are required to ensure a harmonious and effective working environment.

Duty Statement

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Undertake visa and citizenship related casework, applying the relevant legislation and policy to make lawful and fair decisions in accordance with delegations held under the Migration Act and Regulations.  
  • Investigate the integrity of documents and other information in connection with visa applications. 
  • Provide high levels of client service. Liaise with clients, organisations, other visa offices, other agencies within the Embassy and relevant agencies within the host country and Australia. Explain Australian visa requirements and decisions to clients, their advisors and the general public.  
  • Organise and take responsibility for own workload, work cooperatively and harmoniously to deliver services to clients in accordance with the client service charter standards and program outcomes.  

Selection Criteria

Candidates must address all selection criteria for applications to be considered.
  • Analytical, research and decision-making skills which show an understanding and use of legislation, policies and procedures. Capacity to make sound decisions and exercise good judgement.  
  • Sound planning and organisation skills to implement work plans. Flexibility and the ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities to achieve work goals. A proven record of using initiative and knowing when to refer for guidance. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a changing, and often, highly pressured and busy work environment. Superior client-service skills, composure and cultural sensitivity when interacting with clients of various backgrounds. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interpret and convey complex information to clients. 
  • Excellent computer skills and demonstrated ability to use various forms of technology. 
  • Foreign language skills in Spanish or Portuguese
