ANZAC Day, 25 April, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions, marking the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli. More than 8,000 Australian soldiers died on the Gallipoli Peninsula during eight months in 1915, as part of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the actions of Australian and New Zealand forces during the campaign left a powerful legacy. What became known as the 'ANZAC legend' became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways in which they viewed both their past and their future.
We invite all Australians and New Zealanders - and friends of both our nations - in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana to join us at a commemorative Dawn Service at 6.15am on 25 April at the Christ Church Cathedral in Houston to remember those who lost their lives in all the military and peacekeeping operations in which Australia has been involved. The Dawn Service will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast. The Dawn Service and Gunfire Breakfast are free of charge to attendees, but registration is required for catering purposes (see link above).
